International maritime industry: new guidelines for shipping in the Persian Gulf

Recent events suggest that the threats to maritime security in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and the Arabian Sea may evolve rapidly. The growing concerns of shipowners and captains have led the major maritime associations (ICS, BIMCO, INTERCARGO, INTERTANKO, OCIMF, CLIA, IMCA) to publish joint recommendations to complement all existing maritime security guidelines, including the BMP5.

Two corridors are proposed to cross the area, with the aim in particular of facilitating monitoring and security by coalition naval forces. The use of these corridors is not mandatory but depends on voluntary cooperation. The recommendations also list the organisations to contact in the event of an incident or suspicious sighting.

The MICA Center and ALINDIEN staff fully support this initiative, and call for the highest vigilance from the ships operating in the area.
