In support of Palestine, the Houthi rebels in Yemen have publicly threatened to attack merchant vessels with links to Israel. This threat became a reality with the recent attacks in the southern Red Sea.

In this context, following the example of the recent publication for the Persian Gulf, the major maritime associations (ICS, BIMCO, INTERCARGO, INTERTANKO, OCIMF, CLIA, IMCA) have issued joint provisional recommendations for the Southern Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. This publication deals with the need to establish a risk assessment for the vessel prior to any transit, route recommendations and the reinforcement of internal safety measures.
