Update on the temporary recommendations for transit in the southern Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden

The Houthi rebels in Yemen, in support of Palestine, continue to threaten maritime transit in the southern Red Sea, the Bab el-Mandeb strait and the Gulf of Aden. Numerous attacks, including missile strikes, hijackings and drone overflights, have been recorded since 19 November 2023.

In response to these repeated attacks on multiple ships transiting the area, the major maritime associations (ICS, BIMCO, CLIA, INTERCARGO, INTERTANKO, IMCA, OCIMF) have issued joint provisional recommendations for the area. This publication updates the previous recommendations issued in November 2023, addressing new types of threat, evolving risks for vessels, recommendations for routes, and updated internal security measures.

In addition to these recommendations, companies participating in the Voluntary Naval Cooperation (VNC) with the French Navy can access specific advice from the maritime zone commander (ALINDIEN), and benefit from real-time information. For more information on VNC, companies can contact the MICA Center.
